Best 775 Socket CPU

My motherboard has an Intel 775 socket and I'm curious as to what the most powerful CPU I could put in it is. I probably wouldn't get one so it's more of a curiosity question. I think it might be the Core 2 quad Q9650.

What is actually supposed to go here? Some people put their specs, others put random comments or remarks about themselves or others, and there are a few who put cryptic statements.

The Q9650 is the best desktop 775 CPU, but it's grossly overpriced. If your motherboard can support it, get an LGA 771 Xeon CPU and do the 771-775 tape mod. Alternatively, you might be best off getting a Sandy Bridge CPU and mobo combo. That's what I found out when I was building a portable/secondary ITX PC. I had a C2Q Q9650, it was not a great experience. I wish I had gone for even an i3 2120 build and then had the upgrade path of getting an i5/i7. The Q9650 is slower than even that i3, which you can buy for >$20. :/ 


To really answer your question though, the Xeon X5492 is the best on paper, I don't know about overclocking different Xeons and Q96XX chips though.

TDP of 775 cpus vary significantly, also IIRC you dont just need a compatible socket but also compatible chipset, your motherboard matters.
