GDDR"X" Compatibility

Go to solution Solved by Senzelian,

1. Just make sure that your motherboard has a 16x PCI-e slot.

2. Yes, the amount and type of RAM doesn't matter.

3. It's telling you the PCI-e generation (3) and the amount of PCI-e lanes (4, 8, 16).

All graphics cards these days use a gen 3 16x connection.

What you really should look out for is your PSU compatibillity. Depending on the graphics card you need additional cables and a certain minimum wattage.

200watts might be too low.

Here you can see what different PCI-e slots look like.

1. how to find compatibility to my MB? any website links please.

2. can i use any one from GDDR3, 4 & 5?

3. what is mean by 3x4, 3x16?? in PCI Express, which one gives more performance? 3xHigher Number?

System RAM and VRAM are different things, you can put a GDDR5 video card in a DDR4 system.

1. https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B150-GAMING-M3.html (however your motherboard has PCI-E 16x slot for your Graphic card meaning it is compatible with all the latest GPU's (The limitation here is your power supply, 200 Watt is VERY little)

2. GDDR 3, 4 and 5 (X) are just different speeds or graphic card memory (you could kind off ignore this)

3. Your motherboard has gen 3 PCI-E at 16x (16 lanes is full performance) If you would add another identical graphics card in your second PCI-e 16x port then both graphics card will be at 8 lanes speed. (many tests have proven that this does not decrease performance maybe 1 to 2 % max)

Just look at what your budget can afford, but make sure to upgrade your PSU if you are going for a high end graphics card.
