I am currently using a Radeon rx480 8gb on a gigabyte Z170-HD3 with a i5-7500cpu and i have a gtx 570 in a box that im not using. should I use it or is it useless?

You can't run an AMD graphics card in SLI/Crossfire with an Nvdia graphics card, so you'd have to a swap, which doesn't make much sense as the 480 is much more powerful. Just get rid of the 570.

but these cards aren't even close so I wouldn't

I realize you can run multi GPU, the GPUs just can't be from different companies. The OP is trying to use an AMD card and an Nvidia card, which doesn't work because they don't use the same technology for multi GPU. Nvidia uses SLI, while AMD uses Crossfire.

ok DX12 has its own multi GPUs across venders and even AMD/Nivida or AMD/intel will work. this isn't SLI/crossfire.

Ah yes, you are correct. I didn't realize this was a thing. I still wouldn't recommend the OPs setup, as it's probably going to be more of a headache than it's worth.
