Rogers

If he wants to get gigabit speeds then he is most likely going to be using cable or fibre. @Lurick asked what ISP he is using because some ISPs only let you use their modem, and this would also tell us what type of modem he would need.

All a modem is is a device that converts a DSL, Cable, or fibre signal into an ethernet signal that can use by a router.

I have Rogers internet via cable no fiber sadly but 500 / 20

If you're going for gigabit then either the Technicolor TC4400 or the Motorola SB8200, I would call and confirm first though that they are approved for the Rogers network but I know they both can do gigabit.
