Best method of securing my Portable HDD

BitLocker isn't a bad choice. There are other options out there, like the open-source encryption software VeraCrypt, but I find that BitLocker is nice because it's usually built into windows.

I have a WD My Passport Ultra, and I want to secure it from prying eyes and thieves (It was almost stolen while I was abroad).

I know there is a security program for the drive but it's cumbersome - I can't eject the drive when this program is in use, so I have to either power down the PC or just unplug it.

Not favorable at all.

 

So I'm thinking of using BitLocker, but I'm not entirely sure if that would be a good idea.I've never used before, and I'm not sure if it'll do more harm than good.

Can anyone suggest or recommend the best way to secure the files on my portable drive?
