Hey guys, I'm pretty new to PC gaming and everything that comes with it, but I was wandering, with the current hardware, is there a need for me to overclock? and what would I gain from it.

8700k, 1080TI EVGA sc, 16gb 3000mhz G.Skill ram

As this plays most games on ultra at 2k with between 80-120 FPS, Do I need to overclock just yet, or is it something to consider in a years time.

Also, with overclocking do I:

1. Reduce the life span of the components

2. If I put in the wrong numbers, can it bust the component completely, or can I just revert

3. Will this raise the temps to a point where I'd need to delid for it to be effective (What are acceptable temps on the CPU and GPU?)

Thanks

1. Yes, from very long to still very long (decades to about 8-10 years

2. You'll get a crash and things restart. No prolonged damage.

3. Depends on the cooler for the CPU, target clock speed and voltage used. graphics card should handle the overclock with ease.

What is the spec of the monitor? 2k is 1080p, mind you.

1. Not significant if done properly, the hardware will be outdated before even showing signs of damage.

2. Depends on the number, don't try to push too much voltage ever.

3. Delid is not an absolute necessity but very helpful is you're going for 4.9-5GHz on the CPU

Edit: Is your monitor 144Hz?

If you're getting above 60fps and your happy (assuming 60hz monitor) it doesn't matter because your're running max settings. But if in the future you don't then you can overclock. Some say that the lifespan will be reduced with an overclock but as long as you keep things in sensible temp ranges, you should be fine.

Why did you get a 1080ti for 1080p????

The monitor I'm using is an Asus PG278QR - It's 1440p with 144hz, but can be overclocked to 165hz.

The cooler I am using is the NZXT Kraken x62 AIO

Probably confusing. It's 1440p. I assumed that was 2k

no 4k is 3840*2160

&   2k is 1920*1080
