I might be working backwards from the ideas shared on this forum, but I enjoy finding new means of self-sufficiency and less reliance on complex tech and paid services in the long run. I've already given up on dryer machines and I simply hang-dry my laundry now, but I'm curious if I can go even further and drop the expensive and complex washing machine. Not sure what some practical solutions are, but the idea is to need nothing more than water, soap and muscle.

You could redesign the basics of the machine to use a hand crank, excersize bike, etc. It'd really just be a task of replacing the motor with a gear and belt/chain system, two fill valves, and a drain valve.

Or go old school with a bucket and a wash board.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Love your way of thinking. I myself am not really a pro engineer, designer, builder (though I'm far from the worst), but if it does come down to a DIY build project I'll try to implement some ideas you guys share.

Washing machines as a concept aren't really that complicated... Making them smart and efficient has made them complicated. With a basic wash cycle concept you have a combination of wash (soap and water with agitation ), rinse (just water and spinning), and high speed spinning (to remove excess water) to clean clothing.

If you can replicate those modes using that exercise bike or something you would have a neat human powered washing machine

There's no place like ~
