I need to explain to someone how phase shift works with trig functions. Things like a phase shift or -pi/3 how that affects the graph and period. What's an easy way to explain it when they are very frustrated

Adding or minus something to a trig shift the graph. Multiply it by something changes the amplitude.

 

multiply and add/subtracting the dependent variable changes both frequency and period because period is the inverse of frequency

 

e.g. Sin(x) + 1 changes shift the graph by one unit. 2sin(x) increases amplitude to 2.

 

sin(0.5x) or sin(x-0.5x) doubles the period and half the frequency.

 

Or if you just want the for dummy version, tell them the first move the graph up or down while the 2nd make graph from left to right shorter or longer.... wonder if that makes sense.
