Why do you think the modular phones never really took off. It was a great concept idea but nobody actually ever invested the amount of time or money into It. How come this happened?

It was a cool concept that no one really wanted. There were a bunch of tradeoffs that had to be made for some fairly minor benefits and even the benefits came with their own problems.

There are companies that sell semi modular phones like Motorola, LG but if you are talking about full modular like Google's Project Ara then the only one I can think of is Fairphone: https://www.fairphone.com/en/

 

The reason modular phones aren't popular:

• cost of overall phone higher, modular parts weren't that cheap
• lack of support from various part makers which were due to lack of consumer audience buying parts...
• lack of waterproofing
• thicker overall phone in comparison to slimmer flagship phones currently favored
• newer tech may no longer work with original frame/architecture, defeating modularity...

Interesting thought, but it really doesn't make any sense at all compared to what we currently have.

I think the biggest deal breaker was that there was almost no manufacturer support. Modularity works when everyone is on board with a standard, hence why the PC took off: it was more or less an open standard. It's almost a damn miracle when even a handful of companies agree on something.
