Final Cut Pro Rig?

Hey guys! 

 

I am a freelance videographer that does mostly wedding videos and some simple corporate promotional videos. I use FCPX for my editing and I really like using it. I know there are better editing programs out there like premiere and avid. I really don't have the time at the moment to try and learn a new editing platform. For what I do, FCPX works great.

 

Any ways, to my main point. I use a 2016 mac book pro that doesn't have dedicated GPU. I am starting to really feel the lack of processing power that I need for some projects I'm doing with higher resolution video.  I recently had to make a video for a friend that filmed a show choir event for his kid and it was over two hours long at 1080p/23.98 FPS. My rendering took over 4 hours and the transcoding was over 8 hours to complete! This was just brutal, especially since I have other projects I'm working. 

 

I want to build a better rig of my own that still allows me to use FCPX. Something like a hackintosh or even a windows system with the ability to run Macintosh in a virtual window or something. Would love a dual OS system though. So, in the future I can move to a better editing software. Would rather spend something that allows me to expand and upgrade rather dropping over 5 grand on a iMac pro. Is there prebuilt systems out there that are designed for this or should I just spec out my own gear and build the entire thing myself? I just wasn't sure if there were companies out there that can do a custom pc that is designed to run apple and windows for people like me who use certain apple programs and use windows. 

 

Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated! Would love to hear from anyone that has a system like this already and what they use!

You wont be able to discuss hackintosh projects here just an FYI. You will need to go to other websites for discussions on that since it is technically against forum standards and apple terms of service.

 

If you need a PC that can run editing software that is a different story.

 

If you run OSX in a virtual machine I doubt you will be able to take advantage of the increase in hardware on your windows machine.

You will not find this since it would be super illegal. There was a company that tried doing it at one point but was sued out of existence.

If you are serious and this is your job take a business loan out and get a iMac Pro or wait until summer and get the new mac pros. A hackintosh won't be a great option for many reasons

You'll have to spec out your own gear to find out what will work to run video editing software that will Cut your projects down to their Final form. ;) We can help you with hardware recommendations, however, we cannot assist with getting MacOS to run on non-Apple hardware because it's against Apple's ToS, despite MacOS essentially being a Unix derivative.

 

If you just need help deciding on the best price/performance parts for Cutting videos into a Final form, ask away. :) Otherwise you'd have to check out another forum run by a guy who goes under the pseudonym of Tony Mac for further assistance, and research the Google's on your own.

System like that is $1000 or less.

A Hackintosh is going to be unreliable most likely.

Probably more they didnt want their proprietary software used in ways that were not allowed. If you have that kind of environment then people blame apple when it doesnt work instead of the company.

I have run os x on a pc before. while it was okay for the most part, you do miss out on a lot of features such as thunderbolt 3 ports/ airdrop/ imessage/ facetime. I can't even get quick sync to work with fcpx.

 

it is not worth it at all. however 5k imac is a very good option and the new intel with coffee lake is coming out soon ( which i highly recommend you wait for that). 5k imac/15' mbp is more than enough for you, it will be able to edit 4k videos without a problem.

 

I love fcpx and i cannot see myself moving to adobe premier because i have a business to run and i need to edit a video every single day.
