Gonna install VmWare ESXi on my server. I like the idea that I can then access my computers remotely over the internet. Is there a separate OS just to use as a client to connect to the VM remotely? So when I start the PC it automatically connects to the VM.

esxi won't change how you access files compared to any other hypervisor.

Normally ou want a vpn to access your data externally.

How do you want it to connect to the vm? normally just make a file server, leave it running and it will auto connect on bootup.

for file share just use cifs shares in windows. it has auto connect.

Neither, I am asking you if there is a OS that is created by VmWare that is only used to connect to the VM.

What I think you want is a tad of a more of a complex solution called VMWare View (VDI) in combination with a PCoIP Zero Client... that would enable you to turn on that Zero Client which would automatically connect to the gold image that it has assigned.... if you want to study a bit look for VMWare View (Citrix and KVM have other propietary solutions for VDI).
