graphics card titles

i am new to this pc building thing and i was wondering what the different names are. i know for the end numbers that it goes in order of how large the number is. so whats the difference between a 1070 and a 970? is it the generation? if its the generation is a 970 better than a 1050? thanks for the help

Yes the first 1 to 2 numbers in a model number (ie the 9 or 10) mark the generation, and the last two are the actual model. The 1070 is equivalent to a 980ti, so much better than a 970, while a 970 is much better than a 1050 and just below a 1060.

i always use this as a first point of reference . although there are some factory over clocked models that will break this hierarchy but its a pretty good reference point

Low end of the newest models: 1030

goes up like this:

1050

1050ti

1060

1070

1070ti

1080

1080ti

 

The higher on the scale that card falls, its performance is generally higher. To say, the difference between the 1050 and 1050ti is generally about 20-25%. With the gt 1030 being the cheapest and what some would consider the "lowest end" of the pascal cards (not to say the 1030 is a bad card at all, it just pails in comparison to something such as a 1060 or 1080 ((highest performing  "consumer" grade card))

This is just a rule of thumb. Look up actual benchmarks if you really want to know.
