My friend wants to make his first gaming PC. He's a college student with a limited budget. He needs all the parts, and is hoping for the build to have a GTX 1060 (6gb) if possible. (unless someone recommends something nearly as good but cheaper)

His budget is flexible by a max of $100ish if needed.

Thanks to anyone who contributes a sample build.<3

Sorry, I just read that part... I have no idea how I clicked this topic without reading it.

Mhm! He needs every single part. He's hoping to spend the entire $1200, and can increase by a max of $100 if necessary.

You need to decide between a 4k/ultrawide/144hz monitor

(gaming?) mouse + pad

(mechanical?) keyboard + (wrist rest?)

(audiophile?) headphones/speakers

these are very case-specific

He wants a 1080p monitor that is at least 60 hz (hopefully one with good ratings)
Needs gaming mouse but no mouse pad
Needs gaming keyboard
Doesn't need headphones/speakers

You have lots of extra budget, I recommend a large 4k monitor or a 144hz 1440p one, a mechanical keyboard, and philips shp9500s. Mouse is very person-specific

I think he's more focused on max performance, rather than a good looking case or a beautiful monitor. a 1060 is like 400, right? and 16gb of good ram is like 150, and a cpu is like 250, so he's already at only $400 remaining after just 3 parts I think. Monitor, keyboard, mouse, windows 10, motherboard, cpu cooler, harddrive, case, psu all for $400? It seems super overwhelming so I'm asking here, hahaha.

I would however hold off until the newer CPUs hit in a few weeks to get the 2600 instead of the 1600... and can get lower price if you want a different PSU/case, these are subjective parts and depends on what YOU personally will settle for. The keyboard BTW is very good for being so cheap.. I am typing on it right now. Don't know how it would do for gaming though, so bear that in mind. I would still stick with a tier 1 PSU personally for added relaibility, especially if he wants to keep this build for a while and/or swap out parts in the future... that's just my preference.

[edit] - I was going to do an intel variant too... and a super budget one with a basic case/PSU, but TBH it wouldn't save much money at all and IMO it would really unbalance the build. How it is the PSU is warrantied for 7 years and is a great tier 1 PSU that is verified to have good components and should last a while. The case could be changed to another, perhaps the meshify C, but again won't save any money. The monitor could be changed, ultrawides aren't to everyone's tastes, and if he'd be happy with a regular 16:9 1080p 24" or similar you could save a $100 or so maybe.
