how does raid 5 work when you replace a drive

ok so i have 4x4tb drives and one of them is not working so for now i want to use the 3 that are with a 3tb drive in raid 5 now and replace it later with a new functioning drive, when i replace the drive do i need to create a new raid volume to accept the new drive or can i just replace it, i am using freenas

Your RAID controller should rebuild the array after you replace the drive.

 

Google did a study that found that if one drive in the array fails, there is a high chance another drive will soon fail. I will try to find it and add to this post as an edit.
