Hi there first post here,

I am in the UK and looking for a laptop that can run VMs, do some light gaming, and somewhat portable.

I come across online that the ACER spin 5, with i7 8550u and gtx 1050 is on sale, with 8gb of ram.

It costs £900 after the discount, can anyone come up with a better idea then this laptop?

Could you provide some links of online stores in UK? I can help you to pick

Spin 5 15 is good, but it has some weaknesses too like entry level IPS panel and OKish cooling.

A few questions,

Would those intel integrated graphic enough for esport title games, CSGO,LOL? Thinking to sacrifice the graphic card, to try get a cheaper laptop, although I got the budget.

And for the Acer spin 5, or these laptop in general, how likely do u think thermal throttling happens under loads like 2 VMs, or just some esport games? I have no idea about thermals for realistic loads, even after I did some reading.

How about dell? I only saw some XPS and they are too expensive.

Last questions, there no where in the world that it is possible to have a 13 inch laptop with a proper graphic ard right(940mx,150mx gtx 1050)?

BTW you rock mate, looking at ur replies for laptop in this forum amuse me. Thanks.

Yes, for low settings

Depends on which model, every model has different cooling solution. One thing to note is, cooling is becoming more important since Kaby Lake Refresh ULVs are introduced (many model are using 2 heatpipes instead of one). In games throttling rarely occurs. I don't think VM is demanding enough to cause throttling. Also, throttling has many types, the most common ones are thermal, TDP and firmware.

Which model? Buy model not brand, I hate buying laptop by brand. If you're talking XPS 13, it's a solid machine but can be expensive. XPS 15 has problems like VRM throttling and minor temperature issues due to thin profile, however it's still a solid machine, again it can be expensive.

Nope, there are many but I just name a few down here: (all are good choices)

MX150 (8W): HP Envy 13, Xiaomi Air, Asus UX331UN, Lenovo Ideapad 720S 13

1050: Surface Book 2 13.5

1050TI/1060: Alienware 13

It is just sad that the price is not good enough for some of the options.

Seem like it all come down to Lenovo Ideapad 720 15 7700HQ and 1050ti or acer spin5 with 8550U and 1050(slightly cheaper due to the sale).

So it is slightly more powerful CPU (GPU less of the concern here as I am happy with 1050) vs battery life. Am I right here? Other thing worth concider?

I think you're mistaking the 15" ideapad 720 for the 15" ideapad 720s.
