Hello Floatplane peeps!

 

I recently swapped my logic board in my mid 2012 retina MBP with a early 2013 board. Rocking a 2.7 i7 16GB vs 2.2 i7 w/ 8GB. 

 

Idle thermals are pretty crap, sitting around 50/60c. Not sure about ambient temp but I have a basement apartment and live in Canada lol. Just bought some Liquid Metal from thermal grizzly, has anyone on here used it on their MacBooks yet? How are things going for you temp wise? 

 

Also if anyone has a mid / early 2013 retina MBP, you can upgrade the airport card to the late 2013 / mid 2014 card to get AC Wifi and unlock with your Apple Watch!

My recommendation is to use something more viable. The cooling on the MBP line has always been 'meh' at best. I'd rather use something like GC-Xtreme rather than spend a ton on something like liquid metal. :/

I’ll look into that! I did however buy LM almost 2 weeks ago, should deliver soon. I put some arctic silver on today and haven’t noticed any changes.

Again I doubt putting something as high-end as LM onto a macbook will improve the cooling. A bad heatsink design will not be fixed simply because you used the best TIM. It can help... a little, but in the end if you're trying to do anything intensive on a macbook, you're probably going to suffer. >~>

I replaced the TIM on my 2012 MacBook Pro Retina 15” with liquid Metal 

 

the biggest difference is at full load

 

With fresh TIM (thermal grizzly kryonaut) it didn’t throttle but fans went at full max 

 

With LM it went to 100C and fans only at 2500 RPM

Nice!

I just finished applying LM earlier today. Idle temps are around 5c lower than the arctic silver 5 I applied last week. Very happy so far... might do my PS4 now for fun. LOL

LM can help but it'll mostly stop thermal throttling.

 

Apple has traditionally used conservative cooling systems due to their preference of aesthetics and acoustics. The fans ramp up only when the CPU is getting close to TJ max. Some Mac users actually use a Mac app that allows them to set a custom fan curve to come in when the CPU is getting moderately warm. 

 

It's odd but it's been that way for a while now and Mac users have known how to get around this.
