Accessing Plex server outside home network

So when I'm at home and go to the remote access tab on my plex server the red exclamation immediately turns into a green checkmark. For some reason however I have to click on that tab for the outside IP to resolve. I don't know if this is because the public IP provided by my ISP changes every so often? I haven't looked.... 

 

If I used the dynamic dns feature built into my modem would that solve my problem?

Not sure how plex works, but networking in general I got:
 

1. you likely have a dynamic IP address at home, like you mentioned.
2. you can use a dynamic dns service like what is built in to the router to get around this. then, if you want to navigate to your server, put the DDNS address where the hostname or IP would normally go
   1. you can buy a domain and forward it to the ddns address, but that's not free, a pain, and unnecessary
3. once this is set up, i imagine plex needs you to forward some ports. so in your router, reserve an internal IP address (like 192.168.0.110, for example) for your plex server, then forward the necessary ports for that IP on your router.
4. you should be good to go

When this issue happened to me I had to double and triple check my port forwarding rules on my router. Plex is very specific about open ports. Your ISP shouldn't change your public IP that often. I've had the same IP address for 2 years now

How often they change your IP varies. I know people who have had the same IP for over a year and people who have had their IP's changed every day. Using a service like No IP will stop any issues, but the fact is, you need to make sure you are port forwarded properly thru the routers firewall. 

 

I think there is a setting in plex to make your stuff accessible outside the network. I remember when I installed plex that was an option, I choose not to enable it myself.

It wont work through a VPN that is a problem I am running into.
