My western digital 1tb hdd makes a motor noise when starting up. I think it is the read/write head moving into place, not sure just thought i would ask

Erm, a motor noise when starting up... That might be because a HDD uses spinning metal disks powered by... an electric motor.......

Some HDDs use faster start ups, I have some enterprise SATA drives, 7200 rpm, they get up to speed pronto (I think for parking drives in RAID, it has a quick spin up to get ready as fast as possible) and hell yeah it's loud. My 15K rpm SAS drives are like jet engines though. I have some normal SATA drives, WD ones, old caviar blues I think, they sound refined and tame. I would guess the drive you have is optimised for quick spin ups maybe

Yours faithfully
