MSI Drivers/Utilities

Go to solution Solved by TheSLSAMG,

Live Update is a program from MSI that auto-finds and updates drivers. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of programs like this and I would prefer to have more control over driver installs, so I'd recommend against using it. MSI Gaming App is another bloaty application with a suite of functions that you're not likely to use. Some GPUs have preset clock profiles that are made available through it, but the same result can be had through overclocking.

GPU overclocking will differ between architectures, etc. However, the most basic rule to follow is to increase core clock in small increments (usually 5 to 15MHz) until your system crashes in a benchmark. Then raise the core voltage and power limit until it stops happening and repeat until you can no longer reach stability. Finally, revert to your last settings. This video shows the process in practice and goes more in depth:

I have a couple questions about drivers and software with my MSI R9 390 8G:

1. When I used the driver version before 18.2.3, every time I played a game, after about 30 mins, my computer would freeze. When I restart, it says that the Radeon Wattman settings failed, but I have no idea what that is. What should I do? I went to the Windows 10 driver settings and  clicked rollback driver. That has been working for me until the last update of Rainbow 6 Siege. It says that I need the latest driver for optimal settings and then just crashes.

2. What is MSI Live Update?

3. How do I overclock my GPU safely using MSI Afterburner?

4. What is MSI Gaming APP?

Thanks!

Try running this, uninstall the driver fully and then do a complete fresh install of the driver....

MSIs updater software. Some people like to have extra piece of software to handle all drivers. You can uninstall it and do drivers manually.

Check some guides on your GPU. Just basic things are raising core, shader and memory clock and running stress tests until you see artifacting. If you need to go further, unlock voltages and see how much others have used.

I'm not sure. Probably one to control LEDs with games. I usually don't use mobo's software unless I must for some reason. Like atm I got nothing installed. I have Afterburner, but thats been the thing even when I haven't had MSI hardware in my systems ever.

  • 2 weeks later...

After sending my GPU to MSI to look at, they determined there was a manufacturing defect, so they replaced my card for free. I just applied an overclock of about 100Mhz, and stress tested it with UNIGINE. Thanks for all your help. (Sorry for the late reply. Didn't have computer for almost 2 weeks, since MSI has slow af shipping.)
