Why is it that ram amounts usually go like this (as of 2018)

1GB-Not enough

2GB-common at super low end

3GB-unheard of

4GB-common

5GB-unheardof

6GB-rare

7GB-unheard of

8GB-common

9GB-unheard of

10GB-Ultra rare

11GB-unheard of

12GB-rare

is there a reason that PCs dont come with odd amounts of ram? and most people when upgrading usually dont upgrade in sticks on 1GB?

As of recently ddr4 which is a requirement for all recent amd platforms, and skylake or newer come in a minimum of 4gb. There are on occasion 2gb sticks but those are for manufacturers of laptops and 1 gb sticks weren't even a thing on ddr3 I believe.

My guess would be that it's not worth it for a manufacturer to be ordering massive amounts of 1GB sticks (which you'll need to get odd amounts of RAM as everything else is even). It's too small to be a significant upgrade so they'd rather step up to 2 and 4 GB sticks.

You can get 1GB DDR3 DIMMs and SoDIMMs. But there's a reason why they are dirt cheap today on the second hand market.
