I built a computer pretty recently, and it works perfectly besides when Im doing anything graphically demanding such as playing video games. My gpu utilization drops from 100% or wherever it is at the time down to 0% at any given time while I'm playing a game. This problem happened with the HD 630 in the i5 7600k, and it continues to happen with a card I got to try and fix the problem (the GTX 750). Every part in my computer is brand new besides the motherboard, could that be causing the problem?

Are you able to provide full specs, OC settings, and thermal data?

AMD Ryzen 3950x under a Noctua D15S, 32 Gb G Skill FlareX 3200 DDR4 running at 3200 CL14, Gigabyte Aorus Pro 570 Wifi, Gigabyte 2070 Super hooked to a Dell U2718Q 4k HDR monitor & an Acer 1440p 144hz IPS panel of some kind, an Inland 1 TB M.2 PCIE 4 main drive, a Samsung NVME M.2 250Gb, WD Blue 500Gb  and 1 TB SSDs, Corsair RMX750, Rainbows and butterflies...

Sorry I haven't been able to get back to you with those, but since then I've still been doing some research and the only thing that came to mind is a motherboard problem. That's the one used part I bought for my entire pc, and while playing games I have no temperature problems, or any other spikes in other statistics. Do you think the motherboard could be the problem?

Anything is possible, hence why we wanted a bit more granular information. Usually a bad motherboard though would cause an irreversible crash if some call couldn’t be completed.

without seeing actual data from a reputable monitoring program it’s hard to say what is happening. For all I know, you could be running a 1080ti in very low settings in conjunction with a Sandybridge i3 processor with 4 different kinds of ram slotted into the wrong sockets. Or you could have malware blogging things down.

Again, what would help is a proper benchmark package after reinstalling your gfx drivers (use DDU) that includes:

1- all your specs; hardware and software

2- How your ram is set up; speed, manufacturer, timings, and in what slots

3- FPS, GPU/CPU utilization with thermals on both (it would be nice to have other thermals such as VRM)

4- Stability stress test

5- Memory test to insure no ram issues

6- Virus scan results

whay the community would then do is:

1- see if there is any glaring problem

2- look through your set up for problems, such as ram config issues

3- actually be able to see GPU/CPU correlation as that usually points to different issues; a GPU dropping to 0 while a CPU is pegged at 100% is different from one with a CPU partially utilized

You're running your memory in single channel by only having the one dimm. Might not be it, but that will hold you back.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

That's a weird file / website you're using... I'd suggest running a benchmark while MSI afterburner is recording in the background. What gfx card are you using?

I'm using a GTX 750 1gb OC, and that's already exactly what I did.

Ok so:

1- you’re not thermal throttling

2- from what I can see, none of your cpu threads hit 100% so I don’t think your being bottlenecked by the CPU itself. Your GPU utilization drops and your frame time increases. So you’re effectively getting stutter.

in that setting my guess is that your GPU is requesting resources (textures or models) but the cpu is unable to pull them fast enough. Not sure if it’s a HDD/Mobo controller issue, or a problem with the ram.

do you have a spare stick of DDR4 to try instead of the one you have? Maybe run with 16gb for a trial

@Secksee Use lower image quality settings (like lower game resolution, decrease texture and objects quality, etc.), and see what will happen.

You may be simply running out of VRAM.

Do you have 1GB VRAM version of GTX 750 ?

There is no way a i5 7600k can't keep GTX 750 fed with data. Even if it's gimped by Single channel DDR4 memory.

CPU : Core i7 6950X @ 4.26 GHz + Hydronaut + TRVX + 2x Delta 38mm PWM

I do only have 1GB of VRAM! I don't know why it hasn't struck me before, that should've been my first thought. As soon as I can I'm going to test my pc with another GPU, maybe a 2 or a 4 gig. I'll keep you updated.

I didn't test it yet but I turned on the OSD for VRAM usage on Afterburner and it turns out I max out at around 15% and that's very rare, but I am testing it with a 2 gig card tonight so I'll make sure to keep you updated. I also wondered, what if I disabled downclocking? I did notice that core and memory clock both dropped at the same time as my frame drops, but I only figured out today that I can turn downclocking off on Afterburner. I'm going to try that too as soon as I get home.
