Question for future build

Scapechild

So I am planning my first ever computer build. I have done a ton of research and am almost ready to begin buying the pieces that I need for it. I do have a gaming laptop from MSI right now, however it got ran over (please don't ask the story it makes me sad every time) and while it works with an external monitor I really want to upgrade as well as move over to desktop. That being said I have a question that I can't find anything specific on and since I watch a ton of LinusTechTips, I figured this would be a great place to find super knowledgeable people to ask.

So I am trying to find out if the Gigabyte - Z370P D3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard can actually support DDR3L RAM. now I know its supposed to be DDR4 and I know that I "should" use DDR4 and I completely plan to down the line. However, I am trying to save as much as I can to get this project rolling and get the computer going so I can play my games as well as create content, (streaming, videos, game creation, etc.) my plan already is to rip the CPU from my laptop and use that (I have found it is compatible for sure so no worries there) but like I said, I can't find anything on whether I can use this DDR3L RAM in the motherboard. My laptop has 16GB of it, and honestly that's more than I was originally planning on placing of DDR4 at start. So I would like to use this at the beginning IF POSSIBLE.

Plz note that it would not be a final build in any since, as I plan to upgrade over time almost everything about the build I'm putting together. Just trying to save some time and money at the start.

Interesting. I'm a little lost about the RAM part you're talking about though. You said it's compatible with DDR3L ram but I just looked up the mobo's QVL list for ram and here:

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/Z370P-D3-rev-10#support-doc

I don't see anything listed for DDR3L.

Also, Laptop uses SODIMM memory while desktops use DIMM memory modules. Those aren't cross compatible with each other.

Welcome to the forums!

Sorry to crush your dreams, but no, this would not work. DDR3L sticks are 2.8 inches long, and DDR4 is 6.74, not to mention it just wouldn't work due to compatibility anyways.

Narp, no dice. Even if it were possible, it doesn't make sense to save a little bit now only to spend it again later on.

Don't forget to post your build ideas in the New Builds and Planning when you settle on what you're getting so we can tear it apart like the ravenous dogs we are.

DDR3L comes in regular sized DIMMs as well, it's not only SODIMM.

I'm not sure if I have SODIMM or DIMM. (Probably SODIMM since it is a laptop) and won't know until I actually open it up. That being said I really appreciate all the help. I'll drop all the specs once I have everything ready. Also out of curiosity, if it was regular DIMM, would it work then? because I know the CPU is compatible (since I'm taking it straight from the laptop that's working with the RAM) just no real answers on whether the motherboard could potentially run DDR3L.

I know that I should just buckle down and get the DDR4 since I would be doing it later, and I will be. I am just really curious now if it would work. I love technology too much to not wonder about this. :P

Thanks again for all the help guys!
