How to trigger drive optimization via command?

gR7iJAlS.png

Windows 10 doesn't really maintain my drives when it's set to do so weekly so I must do it manually whenever I remember. I want to create a custom scheduled task to automate the process but have no idea what needs to be started and with what parameters to trigger that, anyone have an idea? Any help is much appreciated.

I could do some research on how to achieve what you want. But my first main question is why do you want to ensure a weekly cleanup of your drive? I've had 3 SSD's running for over 2 years and there's no signs of wear or performance degradation.

I left mine untrimmed for half a year or so and noticed a bit of a slow down, trimming it sped it up back to as it was new. I can agree weekly seems a bit OCD but monthly is also fine. I'm silly I know :D

I think the general consensus is that you'll notice more of a slow down if you start actually filling the drive. I aim to always have ~15% of free space on each drive. But I also planned ahead for that when I bought the 2 drives for my desktop. 250gb is plenty enough for an OS and the C:\ drive stuff. Then 500gb for games and software, 2tb HDD for other media and games that aren't read/write intensive.

I'll take a gander at how to do a manual monthly trim though and see what's out there.

Mine has around 40% free so im fine in that regard.

On the snippit you sent, what are the settings underneath that? Do you have the checkbox checked for notifying you if 3 scheduled runs are missed?

Nope not checked. But imagine all of them missed for a span of a year, bah!

Luckily we only live one day at a time. So unless you only check  your computer once a year I'd check the box to make sure you're notified about that. The trimming should be enabled by default in windows though. Do you keep your system up to date?

I had it disabled before when I was new to SSDs and didn't know if Windows would attempt to defragment it so i left it off. Later on I discovered it wasn't the case and enabled it, but it has never done it automatically. I don't update often really.
