hi,

i want to make a ryzen 7 1700 CPU based workstation.

my primary use for the pc is going to be 3d modeling/rendering, video production(adobe premiere/after effects/photoshop) and a little gaming.

i would like some suggestion for motherboard because i am really confused if i should go for a b350 or an x370(i don't really know the difference)

and i would also like suggestions about the other components as well.

thanks

In short: https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2763-amd-chipset-comparison-x370-b350-a320

If you are going to get SLI, then get the X370 boards that have it (no B350 have it). You get a few more ports and (depending on the board itself), support for higher end features -- typically more power phases (more power phases on the board are generally better as it helps to reduce the load on each phase, generating less heat, less wear, etc). I'd personally go "all out" and get the X370 for the extra power phases, SLI support for down the road upgrades, and more SATA support) but a solid B350 would suffice as well!

No worries! Let me start from the beginning then! What are you looking to do PRIMARILY? Based on your post, it seemed like video editing, rendering, etc. Will you be gaming at all or overclocking the system?

thanks,

i am an artist and i work on 3d models, animation and renders as well as video production.

i am going to be working on software like Maya, 3ds max, blender, after effects, premiere pro, photoshop etc

i am going to game a little bit(i don't want to go out of the way to improve the gaming performance)

yes, i would like to overclock the system if it enhances the performance.

but this would be my first attempt at overclocking.

i really appreciate you taking the time.

thanks

Absolutely! It's my pleasure to help! Equal quality X370 and B350 boards will give you approximately equal overclocking potential. What ULTIMATELY sets X370 apart from B350 is what I would call better voltage support (those power phases I was talking about). Based on my understanding, if you are overclocking, the X370 may give you a longevity bonus (again, assuming both boards are good quality) as load is spread to more power phases (reducing wear and tear on the board). You may also get a few more storage options (more SATA ports).

Finally, the X370 will allow you to add another graphics card to run them side by side/work together simultaneously (whereas B350 does not support this simultaneous process -- called SLI by NVIDIA and Crossfire by AMD). You can still install multiple GPUs (graphics cards) in the B350, but they just can't work on the same task at the same time (unless there is some software that allows them to do so that I do not know about).

In short, if you're planning on running multiple GPUs or pushing your system fairly hard with an aggressive overclock and voltage, the X370 will be a really good choice! Furthermore, if you want to have a little more peace of mind knowing you've bought the best of the best (gotten all available features for the platform), then X370 should be your choice!

You'll likely spend a little more for a X370 board, please keep that in mind!

I hope that helps! Please feel free to ask if you have any more questions or clarifications or even just need help putting the rest of the system together!

EDIT: here is a good video that can also help in the meantime!

****I personally recommend that you go with the X370. Nothing feels better knowing that you got MORE than you needed rather than 6 months later realizing that you got LESS than you needed! :)

okay

so these are some options for x370 as well as b350 boards.

ASUS MOTHERBOARD PRIME X370-PRO - INR 12600 = USD 190

MSI MOTHERBOARD X370 GAMING PRO - same as above

ASUS MOTHERBOARD ROG STRIX B350-F GAMING(this is out of stock everywhere) - INR 10000  = USD 150

MSI MOTHERBOARD B350 TOMAHAWK - INR 9000 = USD 140

what should i go for if i choose 370 or 350?

i have seen reviews of almost all of them but it all rendered inconclusive to me.

I've personally had really good experience with ASRock, EVGA, and ASUS. Any of those with high reviews and a solid price point should suffice. The ASUS X370 PRIME-PRO seems to be a really good option! The ASUS ROG Crosshair is supposed to be another very good board!
