How exactly will I install the earspads. I read that there is some foam insert in the m40s that I have to remove from the original earpads and move it onto the new ones.

Also does the shorter side face inward or out?

No you don’t. Don’t use the foam inserts, just put on the pads.

With angled pads the thick part is on the back.

Some people said that they break a lot in the joints near the ear-pads. Have you had experience or heard of this happening?

With the M40Xs? No I haven't had that happen myself.
