Overclocking?

I know you are supposed to turn it up a few MHz then stress test for like an hour but I'm impatient so whats a safe bet for overclocking an AMD Athlon X4 845? also, I don't plan to game with it but I want to use a DDR3 RAM stick to see if the new rig I'm building will boot, is that possible?
