Is it worth buying an amd gpu if i have a freesync monitor?

m0nkey

I have a monitor that has freesync, and i plan on buying either a GTX 1080 or a Vega 56/64 when their prices drop. What gpu do I buy?

Depends.

  1. Which specific monitor do you have (made and model)?
  2. Which games do you play..or want to use FreeSync with?

I find FreeSync not very suitable for games that would require the maximum FPS possible.

If your FPS dips too significantly, it becomes very distracting.

IMO the last time it made sense to buy AMD was when the R9 290 came out.  Now it doesn't make sense to buy anything.

I have 144Hz monitor with nog Gsync/Freesync and never noticed anything that would make want to have those technologies. I play CSGO, PUBG and Fortnite as well so for those u dont need it. My experience have been smooth and I only have GTX 1060.

Having said that I never experienced Gsync/Freesync so if u have then it might be a bit different for you.

Okay, for FPS games, like CS:GO, and PUBG (maybe Fortnite too), you can leave FreeSync off.

Especially with PUBG, since that game is just...pretty badly optimized.

CS:GO might be okay with FreeSync -- 144 Hz constant shouldn't be an issue.

At that point, you'd be limited to 144 instead of... 300 or whatever.

It would probably be worthwhile to have FreeSync enabled for Witcher 3.

I'm using a FreeSync ASUS MG248QR, but I've been playing FPS games mainly recently, so FreeSync is off...but I'm using two R9-Fury cards.

It's up to you; if you want to have FreeSync available, you can grab a Vega 64.

Otherwise, if you want to use your monitor just like a normal 144 Hz, GTX 1080.

Freesync makes large FPS drops less noticeable, or at least no more noticeable than without it. And I'm unsure why it would stop you getting "the maximum FPS possible".

I would have to test it again, but I think it is related to the limited range of Freesync.

Let me see if I can describe what I was experiencing...

FPS was up at 144.

When there was a lot of action on screen, and I am moving the view quickly (e.g. flicking my mouse), then the FPS tanks down to... 45(?).

I noticed dropped frames - or sudden increase in frame time - when the FPS takes the dip from 144 to 45(?).

Let me see if I can re-create this, and record it.

I dont have any problem with the Nvidia over the vega, however I would prefer the vega 64 out of personal preference but that is up to you, that being said, gaming performance is often better with the nvidia cards overall. The main isue here is when prices drop. That's not gonna happen soon buddy, bitcoin is still an a long bubble and will take a lot of time before it bursts, you better try finding the best one you could get by now, it will be painfully expensive but you have no other option. Unless you are willing to wait for at least 3-5 years that is.

The sad part is the bubble wil not burst soon which is why I reccomend not waiting, I know it sounds tempting but the market is still profitable for mining and will be unless bitcoin has a huge and I really mean a huge drop, like to 1000 dollar per bitcoin or something. I had to buy a 1060 for the price of a 1070, and that being lucky, 'coz the regular price would be arround the vega or the 1070 ti.

I use the bitcoin as a reference point since it determines the price of other criptos due to it being the most valuable.
