1070ti upgrade???

Hey guys! 

 

I've posted several times before, but this deal is just to enticing to me. Massdrop has a 1070ti and a z370 motherboard combo deal for $750. I don't plan on 'upgrading' to coffee lake because I'm rather satisfied with my 6700k (for now at least). Here lies my internal debate: is this actually worth an upgrade from a Gigabyte Windforce 980ti? My rationale is multifaceted, but mainly because of inconsistency and some instability (I had to tune down my OC because it randomly started crashing after an update; the original OC was fine for several months for hours of gameplay). I got the card used from Microcenter for about $300 and do have a three-year plan for it. I did have to thoroughly clean the card and completely replace the thermal paste on the card. Even all that, higher OCs (settings that I used before and worked fine) can't hold despite having decent temps and restricting power. 

 

Would this be wise upgrade? I know theres a rumor about new cards being release/unveiled quite soon, but current market prices/ suspected prices are extremely off putting. I don't mind waiting, but am a sucker for a deal. >< 

 

Ultimately: is this a decent deal/should be taken advantage of? Does the performance of a 1070ti provide a significant enough performance leap to justify this?

Does your 980Ti do what you currently want it to do?

 

If yes, then don't upgrade. If not, then upgrade.

Oh, don't get me know. Even if I bought the 1070ti, I'd keep my current card. Just throw it in my gf's build and take her 1060 and throw that into a HTPC I want to build at some point.

It does, but it's...buggy? I honestly can't explain the very *random* inconsistencies I've had with the card. I'm happy about the performance when it's working, but some days it just struggles.

No way, especially not in the current market, the performance difference per $$$ is NO WHERE near worth it, wait for next gen

Sounds like you're not satisfied with the card then?

 

In that case, if you can RMA then try going that route. But honestly, I wouldn't upgrade from a 980Ti until the GTX 2000 series unless you can either resell the 980Ti or have money to burn.

Again, the price is $750 bundled with a z370 motherboard. albeit not the *best* motherboard, but figured I could sell it and make some money off that. I agree with you, though. In that case, if you can RMA then try going that route. But honestly, I wouldn't upgrade from a 980Ti until the GTX 2000 series unless you can either resell the 980Ti or have money to burn.

Would Gigabyte still RMA an 'older' card, though? I'm also worried that the fact that I bought it used may not help my case if I were to RMA it (bad experience with Asrock and MSI with a similar issue).

Even if its $500 the performance you are gaining just isn't worth the outlay. Correct me if i'm wrong, but you seem to have a case upgrade'itis xD

 

If you're gonna upgrade, get a 1080ti and make it worth it or wait it out, this is my honest opinion, I don't even think a 1080 is worth the outlay at this time

If you contact Gigabyte with the s/n they should tell you if it qualifies for a RMA. Don't even worry about telling them you bought it 2nd hand unless they tell you it's registered to someone else (most people don't register their products).

For example: when building my gfs pc, I went to bestbuy to pick up a 1050ti (she doesnt play as intensive games/if at all), left with nothing but bought a 1060 6gb on amazon because it was on sale... 

 

$235 for a small form factor, one fan, ugly looking 6GB1060; YES PLEASE.

I'll give it a while longer. I seemed to find a 'sweet spot' for the card currently, but is nowhere NEAR what I feel it can do. The OC is mild and I can barely turn on the highest settings on Overwatch (which I know isnt hard to run, etc) on 1080p anymore. Even had it running on max settings at 144 on 1080p with no issues. Now all I get are weird graphical issues and BAD screen tearing. 

 

BUT I will definitely try shooting them an email at least. Let's hope the previous user didnt register it. T-T

I hope this is the case. I know Steven from GamerNexus addressed this *if* the rumors were to be true, but I am still worried about the high prices and the newer cards being prices even higher than in the current market. T-T I know this is all a waiting game, but trends seem to be erratic and cant seem to get a grasp on when a good time to buy is (taking advantage of deals, etc).

Yeah but It's for a guaranteed return/ exchange for something equivalent monetarily (that's my understanding of their policy at least). I'm also nearly certain that they sold all their 980tis late last year. It was a miracle I found one at all (one of the reps even said so).

That's why I bought it! But as I said, performance has been weird after the driver update in.... October/November? Just want more high levels of consistency when pushing games to it's limit. Yeah, I know I cant play Total War: War Hammer at max settings; that's fine. But games like Overwatch (as I previously mentioned) arent performing as the once did and it's really frustrating.
