Whatever comes with my Packard Bell 486 machine in 1994.  It has to be less than 500mb.

I remember the default OS was Windows 3.1 and thru a mail-in promotion, I got the Windows 95 for free.

Back in the days, in Windows 95, you can do a whole disk compression that gives you additional space but in returns you sacrifice disk IO speed.

Interestingly, a little over a year ago this drive was

But one day (I think summer 2017) I plugged it in randomly, and it started working again.  A few times it'd balk, depending on which IDE cable I used.  Since I've gotten a Define R5, though (no coincidence I'm sure), it's always worked when I plug it in (which I rarely do anymore).

I wonder what might have caused it to resurrect itself...

Now ... That was the first drive I personally bought.

First one I used at home was a 40MB Seagate MFM HDD in my dad's 286 that he bought in 1989.  (The drive was $340.)  We no longer have the drive (or a way to plug it in), but we still have5722c677d7079_2015-10-06Datel286PC1989-01-A.thumb.JPG.9e0954661f7b6b72fabd2805b174c8c3.JPG

  • 2 weeks later...

the first ever hard drive that I bought separately from a PC was a WD 1tb drive. I'm still using it today abusing the shit out of it with no cooling and running r&w 24/7 with no problems (yet).

God who knows what brand it was... it was 1989-1990, in an Advanced Logic Research 386sx. It had 110mb (it was an after market upgrade from the 40mb standard), and had dos 5 I believe, before we “upgraded” to 6.22 and added windows 3.1 down the road. It was “blazingly” fast and had 4 mb of ram. I believe the GPU was a cirrus logic one with 256 or 512 kb of graphics memory for Super VGA.

the days of ISA cards, jumpers, DMA and IRQ conflicts how do I not long for thee
