It fits because all recent AMD sockets have the same mounting holes.....?

Kind of. There are holes on AMD motherboards that are the same for AM2, AM3, FM2 etc. that any cooler such as the Hyper 212 will have mounts for.

There are holes for different mounts and which ones you use depend on the socket.

AMD have not changed their CPU cooler mounting system since the AM2 days (although the look of it has changed since AM3+ / FM1).

AM2, AM2+, AM3, AM3+, FM1, FM2, and FM2+ are all the same.
