Hello all. I am looking for a Gaming Laptop with the following configurations:

  • Screen: 14-16inch 1080p 120hz G-SYNC
  • GPU: GTX 1060 6gb (Or GTX 1070 8gb)
  • Ram: 16gb
  • Processor: i7-7700HQ (Accidentally typed in K)

I am looking for something that I can take with me for work when I travel. Do you have any recommendations (are there any laptops that exist with this specifications that I want)? I know for laptops, you always sacrifice something to get something else in return. So my priority for such things are as follows (With #1 being absolute importance to #4 which is least important):

  1. Specifications
  2. Temperature
  3. Price
  4. Noise

***Weight and Battery not an issue***

you mean 7700HQ?

do you care about weight or battery life?

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Ahh, I did see that, but no GTX 1060 which is the main GPU that I want to use. I mean, that laptop is an absolute beast, but it is a complete overkill for what I will need. I will keep a track on prices on it just in case there is some price drop at some point, but even then, i would look into a GTX 1070.

I know it sounds weird that I don't want a GTX 1080, I just think it is overkill for what I actually want. I will still keep an eye on it just in case other options do not exist or are not good enough.

No g-sync or 120Hz though, but there is a 4K screen option.

No screen size requirement is provided; but If you go equal or beyond the 15 inches mark in diameter I strongly recommend going 1440p it makes a huge difference.

About your need I found 120hz g-sync panel with a entry level card puzzling... but if that's what you need you might need to dig a bit deeper?

if you could shell out a couple of more hundreds get 1070 with 1440p gsync. Your need might change and it's nice to pick up your existing gear and use it.

Which GTX 1070 models do you have in mind? Ohh, screen size would be 14-16 inches.

If it was my money I'd get Alienware 17 inch (since you included 16 inch model I assumed that 1 extra inch is fine) look for the model with the 120hz 1440p panel-- pick 1070 graphics card if you wish; I assume you won't be compromising gaming on most titles in the next 5 years or so. GTX1080 model obviously is going to pack more horsepower but if you never use the juice why pay the extra buck.

One thing about alienware: expect them to be super heavy. They build it with premium materials and make sure they have ample airflow for cooling which is typically a problem for this class of machines. Ample cooling means When underload you don't have to dial down the performance to keep it cool.  Also if you can wait, alienwares typically have pretty aggresive discounts at the right times.

If portability is an issue for you, look for Razer once. But cooling is not going to be as good so expect thermal throttling when under extreme load.

So far, if I go with a GTX 1070, these will be my options:

https://www.excaliberpc.com/660180/asus-rog-zephyrus-gx501vs-xs71-15.6.html

Processor: Intel Core i7-7700HQ (2.8GHz - 3.8GHz)

Graphics: GTX 1070 8gb (Max-Q)

Ram: 16gb

HDD: 256gb PCIe NVMe SSD

Display: 15.6" LED backlit Full HD 120Hz Anti-Glare Panel with 72% NTSC Display with G-Sync

OS: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

or

https://www.dell.com/en-us/cart?cs=19&~ck=mn

Processor: 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ (Quad-Core, 6MB Cache, up to 3.8GHz w/ Turbo Boost)

Graphics: GTX 1070 8gb (Overclocked)

Ram: 16gb

HDD: 128GB M.2 SATA 6Gb/s SSD (Boot) + 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)

Display: 15.6" FHD(1920 x 1080) 120Hz TN+WVA Anti-Glare 400-nits NVIDIA G-SYNC Enabled Display, Non-touch

OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit

They both are very similar, and cost the same $1999.99. I will keep an eye to see if price does drop more on either of the builds, then maybe i will go with the GTX 1070 Asus Zephyrus, or GTX 1070 Alienware r15.

Solid choices from reliable brands. Do still consider the 1440p options.

Those are interesting. I will keep an eye for them. I noticed that they sometimes offer free upgrades for parts, so I will wait and see if any sales go down during Easter Sunday.

I myself want to buy a laptop, I have $2000USD budget since last November and after 3 months of research I have nailed the one I want

https://www.amazon.com/GL503VS-DH74-Strix-Gaming-Laptop-G-SYNC/dp/B076RB85NV/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1519621473&sr=8-1&keywords=gl503vs

144Hz G-SYNC

GTX 1070,

Core i7,

16GB DDR4,

256GB PCIe SSD+1TB SSHD

but after extensive research, I'd definitely wait for the Coffeelake update as well, seems like it'd be stupid not to.

I'd also wait for the next generation of Nvidia chips though, since we're so close to their release

Ahh yes. That laptop is awesome too, I have that in my radar as well. I know the new GPUs and new generation of CPUs will be coming out soon, so I am thinking that maybe 7th gen laptops will drop in price.

On xoticpc I seen some of these model ad they allow you to customize them. I noticed that they offer more services, such as adding better thermal paste to the CPU and GPU, and even going as far as adding larger copper heat sinks, have you ever tried any of these services or know someone who has?
