Hunt Showdown Early Access

Go to solution Solved by Spotty,

I've been playing this game since it came out yesterday. Anyone thinking of getting it as is - DON'T

Poorly optimised is an understatement. On a i7 6700k and 1080ti I'm getting 35-40fps on a 1920x1080 display with medium settings, AA, vsync, etc off. It runs like a dog. Apparently there's some hidden graphical options you can adjust using console commands that fix this, but I haven't been able to attempt that yet because the last time I tried to adjust visual settings (turning vsync off) the game crashed to desktop.

Servers are useless.

To all that get a “no connection to backend” message: We had to cap the server limit to avoid overloading the backend server which results in the matchmaking issues some might have experienced. It's a temporary workaround to ensure we run more stable. Thx you for your patience!

They've literally blocked most of the players from even being able to log in. I've been trying to play for the last 2-3 hours now and I can't even connect to the server due to their decision to restrict servers to a small number of players, which renders the game completely unplayable.

I did manage to get a few games in yesterday after waiting 15+ minutes to find a game. The first 3 crashed out or the server would disconnect throwing me back to the lobby. Managed to play a few games with a mate which worked and was incredibly enjoyable and even started winning most of our games - Up until our last game which we won and then got to the end screen which awards out exp and cash only to receive a server error message which wiped our progress.

There's only US and Europe servers so if you're in Asia or Oceania region don't even bother.

Gameplay and strategy to this game is actually quite fun.
Goal is to track clues that will restrict your map to an eventual area where a boss monster is that has a bounty to be collected. 5 teams (up to 2 players each) are on the same map and looking for clues. There are AI enemy monsters littered around the map and in built up areas. You get a little bit of exp for killing the AI enemies, but doing so often makes a lot of noise and attracts other players on the map who you are competing with to claim the bounty. Once the bounty is tracked and killed, it will take a few minutes for the bounty to be collectable off the body, at which time you can be ambushed by the other teams if they are still alive. You have no idea how many other teams/players are left on the map. It's entirely possible for teams to be wiped out by AI enemies, so even if you don't engage with rival teams doesn't mean they haven't been killed by AI or other players. If you attempt to take out the bounty monster while other teams are alive and nearby, you can very easily find yourself ambushed. You need to balance the risk of going for the bounty and being ambushed vs risk of another team claiming it before you can get it. Once the bounty has been claimed by a team, the remaining players on the map will be able to track the location of the players holding the bounty and be able to claim the bounty by killing the players holding it - making you the target. You then have to make your way to the edge of the map to exit before being hunted by another team (if any left alive).

Attempting to head on rush the bounty monster will result in pretty much instant death, with bounty monsters capable of 1-hit killing you. Despite this, the bounty monsters are incredibly easy to defeat. They are locked to stay within a set zone (often a building) on the map and they will just stand in the middle of it until provoked. As soon as you leave the immediate region they will return (sometimes teleporting) to their starting position. This means it's incredibly easy to stand on the other side of an open door, a window, or just on the edge of the monsters zone, and shoot the monster without even having it engage you. It will either stand there soaking up your bullets, or pace around its defined area, until you've sunk enough bullets in to it to kill it.

TLDR; It's a fun game but at the moment as it is the servers are trash and the game is so buggy and optimised that it is unplayable. Wait a few weeks to see if things improve.

Spoiler

I understand that it's early access. I understand that there will be bugs, occasional server crashes, and changes to the game. This, however, does not excuse a game that is [as of writing] entirely unplayable.

The Hunt is now available on steam on Early Access. It looks good and is from Crytek. Which have good games. Again, the nervous not wanting to download $30 on something if it never materialized, but I feel that Crytek is a known publisher that should/could be trusted.

Any thoughts?

ive seen lots of people streaming it on twitch over the last few days in the closed beta and it looks like a solid game. Worth the risk IMO.

Remember never preorder things.

Although imo early access is a little different.  Sure, there is still the same risk that it will never get to what was promised, but even Valve says that you should (if you want to be safe) only buy things if your'e already satisfied with the level of content.  Then you can't be disappointed if the developer quits tomorrow.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

If Crytek left tomorrow, would the game disappear as well? Or would you have it in that condition indefinitely?

It would be left in the state it's currently in.  In fact, there's been cases in the past where games were "removed" from steam, but they just don't let new people buy them any more, however if you already owned it you still have it and can run it if you want.  It's just in the case of like servers shutting down that make the game totally useless - things out of Valve's control.

Ok. Understandable. I really don't like preordering. The last thing I did was Andromeda, and that was a bit disappointing...

This doesn't look like a one hour wonder scenario like PUBG and looks like it's got much better quality support.  I wasn't sure how things would go if development stopped for some reason. I'm not a fan of buying a game as a lootbox. It wins it it doesn't. ..

Thanks for the insight.

That was very indepth, thank you! You gave a lot of insight into things I was sort of concerned about and even more than I thought would've been possible! That frame rate seems very low, so hopefully that can be fixed.

The concept seems very awesome. And I feel like I expected a bit more (by bit I mean a lot) from the creators of Crysis. I'll keep my eyes open for future updates and see how it progresses.

You should leave a writeup like this on Steam. it was very good. I marked you as the solution. Thank you again for your time and your response.
