My win8 computer is randomly waking. I haven't had time to check exactly what might be going on, but here's what I've got so far. I've googled it, and got no answer. I've tried using event log, which shows "Unknown cause" , same with powercfg. powercfg shows no wake timers, and I've disabled wake over lan. (I'd rather keep network wake on if possible) I've only been able to test it at night. Approximately 20 minutes after I set it to sleep, it wakes up. I'd love to actually use the sleep function.

tl;dr computer wakes up randomly, no known cause. Not mouse, not network, not wake timers.

Hey,

It could be waking up via the network interface. There are "special" packets that can be sent via network which are accepted by the computer. Even if the computer is in sleep mode. you need to go into device manager and then go to properties of the network device you use. Then go to the "Power management" tab. make sure the "Wake on magic packet" boxes are unchecked.

That can be one of the reasons why the system wakes up for "unknown" reasons.

I hope this helps  ^_^

I just learned a few days ago that sometimes my mouse can power it up after shutdown. Just learned today that if I press any key on the keyboard it will power on from shutdown. I've checked the BIOS, these settings are off.

That option for me is grayed out. Actually it isn't there but the closest one is grayed out.

Certain programs can cause the system to wake.

Things like an AV updating itself, something else updating itself.

Best thing to do is clean up the system startup, disable things from turning on that don't need to be running.

Check the system power management and see if there are any odd options.

Test the mouse, unplug it. See if it still happens.

Ethernet adapter can wake it. There are options to set it not too.
