Buy prebuilt or wait for pices to drop?

As you have all heard, probably at least 500 times, ALL GPU's are WAAAAYYYY over msrp, which makes building a PC right now a bit of a pain in the ass. A GTX 1060 3GB, which should be a $200 card, is now $300+... if it's even in stock. So, what do you do in this situation? I'm trying to get a new PC after my old PC with an AMD Phenom II x6 1055T + GTX 670 build practically killed itself. I was going to get something along the lines of a r5 1600 or i5 8400 with a 1060 3GB but these prices are screwing me over.

 

I have, however seen some quality prebuilts that seem like a good deal. A cyberpowerpc I found on amazon comes with an i5 8400, 8GB ddr4 2400MHz, GTX 1060 3GB, and a 1TB HDD for $899. Wait or buy prebuilt?

There are far better deals out there. Look at r/buildapcsales. I follow that pretty closely and there's some good deals. There's another site that used to be owned by those at meh that I can't seem to remember. 

Overall, with RAM and GPU prices as they are, unless you can barter yer arse off on Facebook marketplace or craigslist, prebuilt is in right now.

I will definitely keep my eye out. I also considered older gen cards like the GTX 970 or GTX 780 Ti because you can find some REALLY good deals on EBAY but I'm not too sure what I want to do.

You'd be waiting months if not a year... silly idea

 

Just work an extra month and get the GPU you want, yes prices are bad but it's not impossible to buy the GPU you want.

Considering the fact that the Ryzen APU's just launched, I might do a build with those and buy a GPU later.

Those are some AMAZING specs btw. Very premium. I bet you're glad you bought the 1080 Ti while you could.

I completely understand, but as with other products there is bound to be inflation at some point or another and I guess now we are at the point where GPUs and Memory just keep getting more expensive. Not sure what the root cause is for the memory, if facts serve me right it was to do with some of the chips produced for DDR4 memory which are in a major shortage and have been for a little while (since phones and other mobile devices are using them too now).

 

Problem with the APU is that it is Ryzen, and Ryzen has low IPC. So unless you are happy to stay with 60fps and don't plan on 100+hz gaming then that's fine, otherwise just get a nice i5/i7 now and save a month or 2 for the GPU you want. Or just wait a little since the 20XX series of nvidia cards should be out in a couple months.

Thank you for the kind words, I wish I could of gotten more ram as I have always had 32GB before but not when it costs more than a 2TB ssd...

 

As for the GPU, not only did I get it before they exploded in price, I actually got it second hand (was 2 months old at the time) for £600 which back then was £120 below RRP anyway haha. These are averaging around £850-£900 used on ebay at the moment with the brand new ones going for £1k + lol

 

Temps me to sell it sometimes...
