(Not sure if I should post this in laptops or in air cooling but here goes nothing)

About a year ago, I bought a gaming laptop for my birthday because I wanted to be able to play some games on med-high settings, while also taking it to school. It all worked out great and I was happy with my purchase.

Fast-forward to today, and I've been having a few thermal issues. In games like PUBG on medium and high settings, I can see my CPU getting to about 80 degrees Celsius. To counteract this, I managed to under-volt my CPU by about 125mv, and my temps are now in the high 60s and low 70s. However, this is still higher than I would like. I decided that I should probably clean my laptop, but I'm not sure the best way to do this. My laptop is the MSI GE62VR with a GTX 1060 6gb and a core i7 6700HQ. Should I just buy a can of compressed air and spray the vents, or should I take it apart to look for dust? I'm also wondering if I should buy a laptop cooling pad, but that's another issue entirely.

If anybody has experience cleaning laptops, your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Take it apart and clean the heatsinks properly with some can aired and little brushes. Then grab some thermal compound and iso alcohol and repaste your CPU and GPU. Then you should be looking good.

Desktop: i9 11900k, 32GB DDR4, 4060 Ti 8GB 🙂

Any recommendations for thermal compound? Also, would a new toothbrush do the job, or do I need a special brush.

Nah, any small brush that wont hurt the fins in the heatsink will work. Pretty much any new thermal paste will be better than what you have, but I would use either Arctic Silver 5, MX4, or some Noctua paste, everyone has their own favorites though.
