Go for 550W 80+bronze just to be on the safe side.

or get a 600W + psu once so you don't need to update it later on.

That PSU will power it fine. There is a TechQuickie video that explains 80+, go watch that.

1. The 80+ efficiency means that the PSU is pulling 80%+ from the wall. The rest goes to waste in heat or at the socket.

2. The efficiency is the point in which the PSU runs most efficient. That point at 50% load.

So your friend buying a 500W PSU for a  system that uses 475W is not  optimal or a good idea. Because the PSU you're looking at has a maximum efficiency rate of 85%, and that is at 50% load, which your friend exceeds by far. That means that a 500W with 85% has about 425W to actually offer at 50% load.

1. The 80+ efficiency means that the PSU is pulling 80%+ from the wall. The rest goes to waste in heat or at the socket.

nope, it means that 80%+ are usable on the DC side of the PSU, the PSU draws 100% from the wall.

A 500 Watt rated PSU with an efficiency of 80% at full load would draw 625 Watt from the wall.

2. The efficiency is the point in which the PSU runs most efficient. That point at 50% load.

The efficiency is the ratio between the useful output power and the input power. The maximum efficiency isn't necessary at 50% load.

The Thunder series is pretty poor in quality.

Where are you shopping/located?

Ignore the calculation. It isn't always accurate. What specs are you running?
