Almost completed build, can't decide on a couple things

Go to solution Solved by brob,

Get a 2x4GB memory kit to take advantage of dual channel memory. Corsair - Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-3000 Memory is a little more expensive but it has better timings.

A 550W psu should be more than enough power. The new Focus Plus Gold are excellent and Seasonic has them very well priced.

In order to fit the budget I would suggest a different case. Good looks with excellent cooling.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vMzQzY (stuff marked purchased is already purchased)

A couple of days ago I bought an i7 8700k on sale and decided to build a new computer with my old GTX 1070.

The aim of the computer would be games (pubg), some blender/unity, autocad, and after effects

My budget for the rest of the parts is 500$, and i'm in the US

I have only one 1080p 60hz monitor (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA85V3T85742) and a secondary 4 by 3 monitor

I have old peripherals I can use

I am upgrading because my old motherboard broke, and replacing it would be a waste of money, so I just decided to sell everything and buy another one.

(also the i5 4690 was having a hard time keeping up with autocad and after effects)

What cooler/ ATX motherboard should I get if I want to overclock to 5GHz? I was thinking an AIO watercooler like corsair h100i v2 but I am afraid of leakage and destruction of the rest of my computer...

The Noctua NH-D15 is good performance wise, but it is an ugly behemoth...

OFF TOPIC: I suggest every poll from now on to have "**CK EA" option instead of "Other"

The D15 is about the best air cooler you can get. The R1 Ultimate is only a few degrees worse though, and looks better IMO.

You could also look into the Dark Rock Pro 4, but I'm not sure if it's out yet.

If you really like the D15, you could get the Chroma accessories; but it'd greatly increase the cost.

I plan to upgrade my memory later on, so I think I might stick with the 8 gig stick for now (to 16 gigabytes, should I just get 2x4 and upgrade to fill all slots later)

Is the cryorig really good compared to the NH-D15?

With a 2x4GB kit one can still add up to 2x16GB kit for 40GB total. The problem with buying a single stick then adding another is the chance, (especially if an identical stick can not be acquired), that the system will not run dual channel.

R1, Dark Rock Pro 3, and NH-D15 have very similar performance.

not really, but if you are looking for the best bang for your buck cooling after the 212 evo, cryorig should be just fine
