Hello all. I have a E7500 based rig , and now , im looking for a upgrade , i saw a used core 2 quad 9550 system selling at a reasonable price online . I thought of paring it with a GTX 650Ti or a 7790/7850 and adding a additional SSD. What are your thoughts , this processor still powerful enough ? Yay or nay ?

Thanks in advance !

Had a Core2Quad Q9550 OC'd to 3.4 with a Hyper 212+ I loved that chip; it was beautiful.

Sadly, last year I upgraded it and Ebayed it. Sold it for $140, the mobo for $40, and the Ram for $80.

Bought an i5 3570k ($169) Asrock z77 Pro4-M ($70) and 8 GB DDR3 ($30) to replace it.

Can't say I want to go back :)

Moral of the story, the 775 series is a bit old, what do you plan on using it for? A Celeron G1610 ($50) and a b75 mobo ($60) might do you better than that quad if you're planning on gaming, Linus said core count doesn't matter that much.

The Q9550, overclocked did a passmark of ~5000. An i5 3570k is >7000. For gaming it made a pretty large difference for me.

But I will forever locve my Q9550.

[TRUENO] i7 4770k (~4.4Ghz, 1.28v) || Thermalright Macho 120 || Asus Z87 Gryphon || 2x8Gb Mushkin Blackline|| Reference NVIDIA GTX770 || Corsair Neutron GTX 480GB || 2x3TB WD HDD || Corsair 350D || Corsair RM750

You will get a cpu bottleneck in certain games like (bf3 64 player mp, f1 2012,crysis 3,far cry 3) while for the rest of the games its fine for now (but you will get more fps with a newer cpu like the I5 3570k).

In short, if you can get a Q9550 for like $80 orso , you can go for it and get fps inceases over your current cpu, but its going to hold you back later on when newer games are out.

It's better to save up and get something like a I5 3750k or the new haswell cpu's depending on when you are planning to upgrade.

Don't upgrade to a celeron G1610 tho, since the performance is weaker than a Q9950 at stock.

First of all , thanks for the reply.

My intention to get this rig is because im very low on budget and this rig suits my budget , but if i wont see significant improvements (i might oc it till around 3.2GHZ i suppose), i might as well skip it.

I wont be gaming that intensively , probably the game to challenge the CPU/GPU will be Bioshock Infinite , the upcoming GTA V and Assassin's Creed 4 at probably medium settings. Otherwise , most of the games will be like FIFA 13 which isn't that demanding.

So, if the Q9550 isnt that worth it , I'll might just wait for haswell ..

IMO' date=' you shouldn't wait for haswell. It isn't much faster than ivy right now and there's rumor that there's going to be only one generation of 1050 socket like the short-lived 1366. Not to mention the bug with usb 3.0[/quote']

It's not like they're going to release it with faulty usb 3.0... They WILL fix it. Waiting for haswell will give him time to save some money and have a larger budget for his new build. I think waiting is a good idea.

Or you could just buy a motherboard with a p35 chipset and overclock the crap out of that processor. They're only like $50 on ebay for a asus or msi mobo.
Also a GTX 460 1GB V.2 would be a great choice for a graphics card ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130856 )
