is SLI really needed for rendering

Dear All,

So i want to build a new PC, mainly to render in 3D and i have some questions:

1-can i run 2 gpus in SLI, while third one alone??

2-does SLI matter for 3d rendering??

3-am i better off using 3 gpus with No SLI??

4-Can the program use 2 gpus to render even if not in SLI???

5-render will be faster with 2 SLI gpus vs 2 non SLI gpus ( assuming the software is able to use 2 gpus not on SLI??

As you can see i am a little bit confused when it comes to 3d rendering and SLI or no SLI, i tried googling but unable to get the appropriate answers, much appreciate helping me out, thank youuuu

Something like Blender doesn't need SLI to use multiple GPUs.

3 way and 4 way SLI only on 900 series or before cards. Even back then, next to no games use more than 2 cards.

rendering doesnt use SLI. How well multiple cards will work depends on the actual app and function.

3 GPU without SLI will do, assuming the rendering is GPU based.

I believe you can assign graphics card(s) independently for rendering work

It doesnt use SLI at akll. SLI is for games only

so you mean, i can assign 2 or 3 gpus to render the same object/scene/animation in an application? (of course if the said application has that option?)

Don't go for SLI. SLI is not encouraged nor actively supported beyond 2 cards. And even so, 2 cards in SLI is 1 card too many.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

3-No

three GPUs no SLI would help incase it was a farm?? but wont be helpful because application cannot use multiple GPUs to render the same scene? what about 2 applications running, each using one gpu?

The number of gpu that can be used for a rendering job depends on the software being used. Some software will work with SLI, but most don't, they directly control each gpu.

What rendering engine(s) are used?

See https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/faqs/. Octane can use multiple gpu. Check out all the gpu related questions.

Premiere Pro supports dual gpu for exporting/rendering but only uses one for accelerating editing/playback tasks.

As far as I know After Effects can only use one gpu.

  • 2 years later...

Something like octane can use 2 different cards without a problem.
