AMD 2400g bottleneck the GPU?

I'm planning on a new build for a friend. Since he doesn't yet have the budget for a GPU I adviced him on building on the new AMD 2400g so that he can game a bit until he gets a dedicated GPU like a GTX 1070/1080.

My question is will the 2400g bottleneck a GPU like the 1070/1080?

1070? No not really. The 1080 will be bottlenecked by a modest amount if you expect to play on a 120hz or faster monitor.

depends on the resolution, I'm assuming 1080P if using a iGPU, in which case a little at high refresh rates

Not too much.  A 2200g would bottleneck a bit but a 2400g will be a pretty good match.

Depending on refresh rate and resolution (i.e. 144Hz 1080p) he could see a bit of a bottleneck, but of course he always would have the option to upgrade to something like an R7 1700 and then sell the APU to recoup a bit of the money, if he feels that he's missing out on enough performance.

So a combo of the 2400G with the gtx 1070 on a 1080p 60hz monitor will be okay however not so good on a 120hz monitor. Correct? 1440 is out of the question I'm assuming

higher res lowers the importance of the CPU (its still important) as it places more stress on the GPU

CPU demand generally does down with higher resolutions, so if anything 1440p would be better. If my 7950 has enough oomph left in it, I can actually get higher framerates at 1440p compared to 1080p (CPU being a G3258 at 4.6GHz).

You will lose like 2-5 fps at 120 hz, not a big problem at all. You can do 1440p 144hz to just fine. No need to spend loads of money for a few more fps.

Thanks Had the same question. I started with the 2400g and now have the cash for a 1070 or 1070ti if its only a little more for the ti  or if there any deals but just wanted to say thank you all for the comments very helpful.

it will hold you back unless you aim for higher than 1080p resolution and 60FPS gaming.
