Ubuntu newbie here

Go to solution Solved by KarathKasun,

Ubuntu/U+XOrg is there for compatibility AFAIK.  They are mostly the same, but the Xorg one uses a legacy back-end/rendering engine.

Think of Ubuntu as using Vulkan and Ubuntu on XOrg as using OpenGL.

Hey guys, how are you all doing?

I'm really new to ubuntu or any linux distribution in general. And a very funny thing happened to me when i rebooted my Ubuntu 17.04

When it booted up the lockscreen was fine but when i logged in, the ui was very weird, the status bar was on the bottom corner and everything was grey.

I rebooted it again and messed in the lockscreen, and i found a cog with some options(Cinnamon, ubuntu, Ubuntu on xorg) i changed to ubuntu and everything seems fine

What are those options? are they merely cosmetic?

Those are the window managers, think of them as UI skins.

You can install tons of these and select which one you want at login.  I prefer LXDE because after logging in it uses maybe 50mb of memory.

Ohhh, that's awesome

Which one is better? Ubuntu or Ubuntu on xorg?

And thanks for the recommendation, i'll try lxde
