I just upgraded to a 400 mbps internet plan and got a new modem. When i'm connected directly to the modem my speed is fine, but when connected to my router, the speed drops back down to 100 mbps. My router supports up to a ful gigabit, so I have no idea what the problem is.

Lets start with the basics:

Go to Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings > Right Click on the adapter > Status

Does it say 100Mbps or 1.0Gbps?

What model router?

What model motherboard?

Make sure your on the right band (5GHz instead of 2.4GHz) when using wireless and keep in range with the router as you will see that the speed degrades really quickly as you stray away. 400mbps is a lot of bandwidth! Routers that advertise high speeds usually add the theoretical throughput speed of all the supported bands.

If you can also provide information about the devices you are using just like @Lurick said that would be great!
