I personally think it comes down to the task you are performing, type of raid, how many drives etc

 

keep in mind RAID5 or 6 has a decent ammount of compute so a ROC (Raid On Chip) could be nice to take that stress off your system. For the vast majority of home users, on board RAID is probably fine, and I would highly suggest not using RAID5. If RAID5 highly appeals to you, strongly consider RAID6 as a read failure during a rebuild could doom your data
