WD HDD spin down noise

Hi,

This might be a stupid question, but just want to make sure its normal, I have a WD 1TB blue drive in a prebuilt Lenovo 510s-08ish

The HDD noise is quite audible but I'm guessing its just because its on the desk next to me and the drive is right at the front of the enclosure, the thing I'm slightly concerned about is the way it spins down.

 

I've made sure its the hdd, I can see the cpu fan and its not spinning, and the short and long smart tests pass fine

When I shut down the computer, and the screen goes black and the power lights off, you can hear the hdd sort of slowly stop making noise like its slowly stopping and takes around 5-10 seconds, my logic behind it is the platter is just slowly coming to an halt since the motor doing it abruptly might damage the motor?

That's how mechanical hard drives work, their platters slow down when they lose power.

Totally normal,
If it bothers you, you can do this:
Go in to power options and select the advanced settings tab, change the option to turn off the HDD after 10 minutes (set it to 0)

My desktop is on 24/7 and it always annoys me when the storage drives power down by themselves after 10 minutes of inactivity, so I do not let windows turn them off :)

I also think that's normal. I have 2 HDDs in my main PC and both are Seagate. They are 1TB and 500GB. The 1TB stops spinning pretty quickly, but the 500GB one spins down slowly like your HDD. Some HDDs spin down faster or slower than others.
