SSD not found

Go to solution Solved by Tosa,

Maybe they have identical GUIDs? Try booting from both of them with the other unplugged, one at a time. Does it boot?

Hello all!

So, I did an upgrade from a 250gb SSD (evo 850) to a 500gb (also evo 850).

I used the Samsung Data Migration software. Which went completely fine, but now the 250gb evo 850 SSD is no longer visible to my pc.

I've tried looking for it in DiskManagement, PC folders, and BIOS. Nothing whatsoever.

I tried different sata cables and ports. The same goes for the power input into the ssd.

Anyone got an idea?

Thanks for reading!

Should be in disk management. That it disappears as in no drive letter is normal. Try connecting it to another PC to make sure it didn't Akbar itself.

@Tosa

They were both visible in diskmanagement when I was preparing the data migration. Will see if the old one still has windows on it.

@NelizMastr

As I said in the post. It isn't in diskmanagement. The old SSD is intended as the boot drive for my laptop, and when I try to plug it into that one I only get to the bios.

It might've ackbarred itself, seeing as that bios also didn't show the ssd as a bootable option.

Please be clear whether you are using a laptop or PC, or both. You've only just mentioned the world laptop now..

Ah, sorry.

I am unable to find the SSD when I plug it into my PC.

My laptop, when I place the 250gb SSD in, simply boots up into the bios and doesn't show up as a boot-able option there. (Boot order part)

No worries.

Make a bootable Windows medium, install your SSD in your laptop, turn it on and keep tapping F12 (might be F9, laptop dependant etc) and boot from the Windows medium.

As it already has a Windows installation on the SSD it could well not boot up when installed in the laptop. Quite normal.

Start from there and see how you get on.

Probably gaming or helping technophobes with tech...

Will try. Will need to find my USB-stick first though :P

And you should also be able to see it in the BIOS. Don't look under boot priority or boot list etc, it should be on the first main screen. If you can't see it there you've got a problem.

I actually had this once with an older Tosh laptop that wouldn't recognise my SSD until I flashed the firmware on it!

Probably gaming or helping technophobes with tech...

Invest in a USB 3.0 SATA adapter/cable from Amaozn. Best purchase ever for things like this.

Yea, I have been eyeing such a thing. I usually do not have to worry about these kinds of situations though. Might as well do it anyway for in the future.

Also, I fixed the problem. I used the old HDD from my laptop in my pc, then attached the SSD. Somehow this worked and the ssd showed up in the diskmanagement window. Seems like @Tosa was right I think.

Thanks for all the help!
