Fixing my permissions

I installed wordpress using the guide made by digital ocean, or atleast I think it was that one...the most reccomended one lol. I ended up with a mostly correct install except for a few things, plugins that add buttons or change things in the theme do not work, the css editor has no save button in some themes, most themes do not fully function correctly. Basically I am wondering how to check that the permissions are set correctly and how to fix them if they are not. Yes I installed this on my own server that is in my closet so no I cannot contact my host about it :P Oh I also cannot delete themes.
