People that mostly complain about this dont realize the cost associated with running fiber or cable to an individual. Im sorry your internet is poo but ISPs are still a business and unless they get a grant have no incentive to pay $10,000+ to run a single line to a single customer.

Builds aren't that expensive, especially when they aren't digging up the streets for NBN fiber (mostly).

I should also mention I do quotes when designing my networks....so I kind of have a pretty good grasp on the cost. Dont forget there is labor cost on my side with provision, testing, maintenance windows. Thats all included. When fiber is laid its not single fiber but usually 288 or 144 count which for us around a mile is around $20,000/10,000 alone. Then include, ONT, SFPs, internal wiring if needed...blah blah blah....And that is the cost for power line ran fiber. It actually very expensive and people need to step back and realize that. Our $25 million grant only covers around a 25 mile radius (estimated we'll see toward the end of the project).

Having said that you are looking at US pricing, not Australia.

For FTTP installs here, it's only costing about $2900 AUD for NBNCo to install to premises. There are obvious exceptions to this rule but that's the average cost.

Well it being pushed by the Gov., prices are def going to be massively different. I would like to see the price break downs (from them of course)

Not exactly - NBNCo is a private company with some funding from the Government however the majority initially is in loans from the government. They then have hundreds of electrical contractors & network engineers doing the installations.

Here in Aus it's not usually that expensive to build fiber.

The exception though is where there's absolutely no existing infrastructure. E.g. the project I worked on last year for one of our clients: 180K build because they were 4.2Km from the nearest POI with next to no pipe.

That the point im trying to get at. Without grants, loans or help, no business in their right mind is will to lose money to satisfy one or even a handful of customers. They are still a business and still need to make money. At least in my area, $10,000 for a new install to a customer over the lines for fiber and even our competitors, cable, is very common. I mean the $25mil grant is nice but that only a 25 mile radius of the 175 mile radius of coverage we have. Clearly you know what I am talking about with a customer only ~2.5 miles away and the price tag that goes with it.

Point being, being an ISP is very expensive, ISPs are businesses.

what about dropping in some 5g cell towers to be point to point repeaters

this would save on several miles of fiber lines and could do at home 5g modems for rural customers while hosting a small wired network from tower

this would allow a rapid expansion of high bandwidth data services to all while the wired infrastructure can be installed

also note you damn aussies get your wildlife to quit eating the fiber bundles your network will be a lot more stable

Fixed wireless is already a growing thing, much better than 5G. In Aus its not that bad as its relatively flat as terrain is the limiting factor most the time. And its super cheap.

whos your ISP ... i only ask because i hope its not the one i work for ... but yeah FTTn is pretty much aids mate ... we all hate it ... just be glad you dont have to deal with NBN they are really horiffic to deal with ... every ticket we send in for an end user they basically reject saying its in the Access seeker (isp) network and we have to fight to even get them to look ...

yep we gave one company a manopoly on future internet and said other carriers were not allowed to sell access network ... and then we told them they can charge what they want for it ... then you add to that the TIO gets complaints only from End usere and NBN has basically said ooh cant be us to the TIO so the TIO is looking at ISP's when they should be looking at the whole bloody network

</rant>

isp's didntg run the fibre in ausi .... its a company that got handed a money press and then charge a stupid amount to ISP's and provide really sub par support ... still NBNco are better to deal with than OptiComm (another Ausi FTTH supplier

the amusing part of the cost thing is FTTN pushed the price per location up rather than down like predicetd ... they aparently forgot to account for the VDSL nodes needed and remedial work on the ageing telstra copper
