2. 16bg of ram

3. 1070 GPU (don't worry on price!) this is a FEBRUARY build. GPUs should be back on market , hopefully.

With that components and considering you're supposed to take a good PSU, disk and motherboard, just the parts without the GPU will be 1000$.

I just built a PC with a i5-7600k, 16gb ram, m.2 250gb, evga 650W, PSU, Asus z270-A and a cheap case and it's 950€

$1,000 - ish , more is fine...  just not $2,000.

Well then, that's totally doable. As i said, the above parts are ~1000$. The GTX1050ti costs 180€, 1060 is 300€, 1070 is 500€, 1080 is 700€. How far you stretch the budget in that case, is a choice your friend needs to make. If he's going to game and is trying to save on the cash, the 7700k is a bit of a random choice. the i5-7600k will be just fine, which you can also overclock. You could also take a SATA SSD instead of m.2. like i used to save like 50€ or a bit less

EDIT

You can read this is you're deciding between the 7600k and 7700k

IF he's gaming at 1080p, the i5 7600k will be fine, which can also be overclocked very well. But if he wants some of that xxxtra longetivity and performance, the 7700k is great too, but more expensive. (it does have 8 threads tho)

I personally think an 8th gen CPU would be best, so I made a build with that in mind ;

But if he's really focused on the 7700k, then there's also this ;

For both build I didn't choose a case since this is often a preference thing, as for the price, it's sitting @ over $1500 because of the GPU price, without the GPU, both builds are around $700-$750 (but you would have to add a case and Windows).

Well an i5 8400/8700k will perform better in gaming either way.
