Just something to add - IDE requires master/slave setup as well, SATA does not have such problems.

It's pretty self-explanatory really. Think of it has master-cylinder and slave-cylinder, the master is more important and does more 'work' while the slave is less important and basically assists the master in doing it's job properly.

Basically it was the way the motherboard would interface with, and organize, HDD's.

 

The "Master" drive would be the primary drive, and would boot first. The "Slave" would be reserved for either a secondary storage drive, or, more often, a CD-ROM drive.

 

Each HDD would have a set of pins, and a jumper, and you would have to designate which HDD was Master, and which was Slave.

 

"Newer" IDE drives would include a "Cable Select" jumper setting. A standard IDE cable had 2x connectors on the cable, so you could connect 2x HDD's (or 1x HDD and 1x Optical Drive, etc) at once. The one at the end was the Master, and the one in the middle was the Slave.

 

Using "Cable Select" jumper settings would honour that arrangement. Using "Master" and "Slave" jumper settings would override the order in which they were attached via the cable.

 

Needless to say, it's an unnecessary hassle.
