i want to use server 2012 R2 for making a video streaming server. I was trying to do this with Windows Server Essentials and at the final steps where i got to setup anywhere access, it wants me to put in a domain. and i think here i have to put a domain that i have actually bought. And i dont have one. im trying this for learning purposes to stream from one Virtual machine to another and i was wondering if there's a possibility such as using a domain name that i have setup locally by using dns in server 2012 to complete this. If it isnt possible i would like to know if there are any other video on demand streaming services in server 2012 R2. Thanks

If you have a Microsoft email account, you can make a free domain with Microsoft (yourname.remotewebaccess.com). You should see the option to use a free domain from Microsoft in the anywhere access wizard

hello, thank you for replying. i logged into my MS account and made a domain. there wasnt any option called free but i guess it is free as i was not prompted to pay for anything. However, right at the end of the setup i get the errors shown in images below. i did some research on this and i saw many people tell to enable port forwarding to port 80 and 443. i tried to enable port forwarding in my router, when i set the IP of my PC to do this i got an error saying my ip is invalid. i tried to get a new ip for my server by using ipconfig/release and renew command but it didnt change it. idk if the error i got from this anywhere access setup is due to not having port forwarding or something else. and dont know if im not able to get new ip to my server because im running it inside VMware. any suggestions to fix the issue would be very helpful.thanks

An active directory domain is not the same use of the word as ‘domain name’ and you can set up an AD domain that is invalid and/or you do not own.

ie madeup.local is ok

www.google.com is ok

Best practice is to use a valid sub domain of something you do own.

ie

ad.linustechtips.com

never ever ever set up a domain with the same name as a valid internet domain you own or you will have never ending dns problems (ie linustechtips.com)
